Background of the Study
Blood donation is a critical component of healthcare systems worldwide, providing the necessary blood supply for emergency situations, surgeries, and the treatment of various medical conditions such as anemia, cancer, and trauma. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that hospitals maintain a safe and sufficient blood supply, and blood donation campaigns are a key part of this effort (Adeleke et al., 2023). However, in many parts of the world, including Nigeria, there is often a shortage of donated blood due to a lack of awareness and misconceptions about blood donation.
Nurses, as healthcare professionals with direct patient contact, have a significant role in educating the public about the importance of blood donation, addressing myths and misconceptions, and encouraging voluntary donation. They are often involved in organizing blood donation drives, educating patients and the general public about the need for blood donation, and ensuring that the blood donation process is safe and efficient (Ibrahim et al., 2024). At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, nurses are integral in promoting blood donation awareness, but it is unclear whether they are adequately trained or have sufficient resources to carry out this task effectively.
This study aims to appraise the role of nurses in promoting blood donation awareness at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, examining their knowledge of blood donation, their involvement in awareness campaigns, and the challenges they face in encouraging the public to donate blood.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical need for blood donations in Nigeria, awareness campaigns often fall short, resulting in blood shortages in hospitals. Nurses are positioned to be key agents in promoting blood donation awareness, yet there may be gaps in their understanding or training related to blood donation practices. This study aims to assess how nurses contribute to promoting blood donation awareness at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the challenges they face, and the effectiveness of their efforts.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' knowledge and awareness of the importance of blood donation at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
To evaluate the role of nurses in promoting blood donation awareness and organizing blood donation campaigns.
To identify the challenges faced by nurses in promoting blood donation and suggest strategies for improving blood donation awareness.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge and awareness of blood donation among nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital?
What is the role of nurses in promoting blood donation awareness and organizing campaigns?
What challenges do nurses face in promoting blood donation, and how can these challenges be addressed?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with higher knowledge of blood donation are more likely to effectively promote blood donation awareness.
There is a significant relationship between nurses' involvement in blood donation campaigns and the success of these campaigns.
Nurses face significant challenges in promoting blood donation awareness due to lack of training, resources, or public misconceptions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital who are involved in patient care and blood donation campaigns. It will assess their knowledge and participation in promoting blood donation awareness. The study is limited to one hospital, and results may not be generalizable to other regions or institutions.
